The Role of Hypnotherapy in Healing Grief

In one study conducted a psychiatrist reported that the average success rate for hypnotherapy was 93%, leading one to believe that hypnotherapy can have great effects on individuals looking to rectify an emotional dependence, heal past trauma, or even get over the grief after the loss of a loved one.

Psychiatrists see prolonged grief in about one in every ten bereaved people, and these intense feelings of grief that carry over after the natural grieving period are often caused due to repression of the certain feelings or even the traumatic events experienced. And, while grief is not the same for everybody, there are certain individuals who experience this intense emotion in a much deeper way than others and can benefit from hypnotherapy as a form of treatment in order to process their emotions and let the grief go.

How Hypnotherapy Aids in Emotional Recovery

Due to the fact that hypnotherapy can lead people to regress back to the original traumatic events that they experienced, it can be useful as a healing technique simply due to the fact that it gives them the opportunity to heal their emotions regarding the situation and finally let the grief go. The patient, therefore, is no longer required to repress these strong emotions and won’t be subject to as much to the physical and emotional pain of carrying that around.

This can manifest in many techniques, but the positive reinforcement and self-esteem technique in hypnosis is particularly helpful. In this type of trance, the grieving person would be taken into a deep hypnosis and be asked a series of questions that elicit a positive response, such as “What did you love about your partner,” “How is your life better having had that person in it,” and so on. This continued positive reinforcement helps you view the loss in a positive manner to make it less emotionally charged and negative and therefore easier to process.

Rest from Your Grief

Hypnotherapy provides patients with the opportunity to actually rest from their grief. Oftentimes, the emotions and stress associated with the loss of a loved one are so intense and overwhelming that many people don’t have the chance to take a step back and breath. Hypnotherapy, much like meditation, provides you with the mental capacity to organise your grief so that you can take it step-by-step without it feeling overwhelming as well as find a place for the grief in your life in a way that seems manageable and comfortable.

Grieving the Way You Need To

Grieving is a process, and it is not the same for everyone. It is important to remember that the grief process is not a permanent emotional state and that you can get better. By incorporating hypnotherapy into your healing process, it can become less charged with emotional stress and negative feelings, leaving you more time to reconnect with the positive memories of your loved one as well as walk through the process at your own pace.
